GARRRR!! QUIET!
GARRRR!! QUIET! Me noggin's hurtin' from too much mead last night! Aye, but that lassie....heeeheeheee! Oh, it's YOU! Never mind!.....

While the Mediterranean Sea was boiling with all that activity, all over the world there were raiders of the lands from the sea. Even the Polynesian Islands were active with raiders that came in their mighty voyaging canoes, some known as "vaka taurua". Then all the way over to the Alaskan coast where the Haida & Tlingit tribes from coastal British Columbia would come raiding the coasts as far south as California enslaving as well as pillaging. So, if ye are wonderin' why it is ye fancy the idea as a "pirate", well, it goes back a long long way. The planet is deluged with the practice!

The Baltic Sea was a haven for the Slavic piracy but was ended by the Danish in the conquest of Rani in 1168. Then in the 12 th century, the western coasts of Scandanavia were plundered by the Curonians & the Oeselians from the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea. They became so strong that in the 13th & 14th centuries, pirates threatened the Hanseatic trade routes & nearly brought sea trade to near extinction. The Victual Brothers of Gotland(next to Gotmilk) were a group of privateers that later turned to piracy.
Until 1440, maritime trade in the North Sea & the Baltic Sea was seriously in danger of attack from pirates. That means it was most likely you'd be seeing them than not!

Now, spinning our globe to the lands of India, noted in the sacred books of Veda are recordings of pirate invaders by the Muslims. In the 7th century, the new kingdom of Hijaz launched a huge fleet of trade ships to India, especially Sindh. However, a ship in route from Sri Lanka to Baghdad was carrying treasures, spices & some slave girls which were looted off Debal (near modern Karachi) by the Meds. It is said that one of these fair damsals wrote a letter to the Caliph saying that he couldn't rescue them. The Caliph answered by sending his army to save the slaves. Any reason to war against the Sindh was a good excuse to him . The Sindh took the approaching army as a threat & were itching for a fight too! So,it was for many many years of continuous raids, battles, & all out mayhem. Since the 14th century, the point of India was divided into 2 entities. On one side stood the Muslim Bahmani Sultanate & the other stood the Hindu kings rallied around the Vijayanagara Empire. This long war was in need of fresh supplies of foods, weapons, horses coming from the trade routes of Africa & Persia. Pirates along the western coast of India profitted greatly from this war. One such pirate was Timoji, who operated off the island of Anjadip as a privateer(by capturing horses & giving them to the raja of Honavar) & as a pirate that attack the Kerala merchant fleets.

Now, that's havin' yer cake & eatin' too! I appreciates yer vote! May Poseidon smile favorably on ye sea voyages! Arrr.....
