Buddy's Helicopter Ride (7) Don’t be afraid, she's easy to fly, so here's what I want you to do. Put your feet on the peddles. Notice that I'm holding the left peddle in slightly? That's because the torque from the main rotor would cause us to spin in the oppiset direction as the main rotor. By holding the left peddle in slightly, we compensate for that reverse torque by changing the pitch of the tail rotor. Ok, now take hold of the stick in front of you with your right wing. Notice that I'm pushing it slightly forward. This tilts the main rotor in the forward direction. So, what I want you to do is keep your left foot pushed in on the peddle and hold the stick slightly forward. Now, look at the gauge that looks like a horizontal tube with the ball in the middle of it. That's how we know when that our nose it pointing straight ahead.. You need to keep that ball in the center. You do that by moving the peddles slightly. It's a little hard at first but you'll get the hang of it. " "Ok, at any time when you are flying, if I say the words, "MY AIRCRAFT", let go of the controls immediately. Ok, are you ready? Ok, Buddy, "YOUR AIRCRAFT" Popeye takes her wings and feet off of the controls as Buddy fly's down the 605 freeway corridor. "Buddy, you're doing great. Look to the right. There's the marina and the jetty (10). Now, here comes the fun part. You're going to make a right turn. But first, I have to tell Long Beach that we are turning. Don’t talk for a minute while I talk to Long Beach.” POPEYE: Long Beach Approach; Helicopter, Three, Echo, Zulu, at the jetty. LONG BEACH: Helicopter, Three Echo, Zulu, turn right to heading 275 degrees; descend to 150msl and watch for local traffic at the beach. Coast Guard and Long Beach Police have aircraft in the vicinity." POPEYE: Three, Echo, Zulu, Roger. I have the traffic in sight. Ok Buddy, now, do exactly what I say. Move the stick in front of you to the right and at the same time, press the right peddle in slightly. Ok? Now." Buddy moves the Cyclic stick to the right and presses on the right anti-torque peddle. "Ok, hold it there. Good. Now, bring the stick back to the center position and press the left peddle in. Great! You just made your first coordinated turn in a helicopter. You're a natural. You should take lessons. Look back to the right (11). There's the jetty where you turned. Now we have to drop down a little so I'm going to take her now. Ok, Buddy; MY AIRCRAFT". |
