Hello from SKY visiting the IOWA PARROT RESCUE, in rural Letts, Iowa.
I was blessed with the opportunity to speak with founder and president Mike Hutchison and his wife Abi by phone this week. I was extremely moved by the love and devotion that radiates from these two dedicated individuals. It all began when Abi received a pet Canary for Christmas in 1998.
Shortly after receiving the Canary, Mike and Abi were approached by friends and acquaintances, asking them to take in their unwanted pet birds. After much internet searching, Mike discovered the great need for a place that would take in these unwanted and neglected pets. IOWA Parrot Rescue was born.
Since it's opening in 1997 many birds of all species have passed through their doors, often arriving badly abused, underfed, neglected, and loaded down with behaviour issues. Due to poor care, many require medical attention. Yet, even in these hard financial times their doors remain open to birds in need. In March 2012 they were forced to stop taking in Budgies, Cockatiels and Lovebirds due to limits on space.
The Iowa Parrot rescue works hand in hand with several other rescues to ensure that all birds in need can be safely accepted into their facilities. Mike spends considerable time visiting schools, community groups and other venues that welcome him where he speaks of the correct care, needs and the respect that all living being deserve, esp. us BIRDS, bringing a greater understand to all.

As of November 6th, 2012 684 birds have been successfully rehomed. Mike is quoted ashave f saying, " over 70% of in-coming birds are adolescent Macaw Males. Owners failing to do their research are unprepared for the change in attitude, behavior and sociability that comes when young Macaws reach puberty, esp. the males who in the wild would leave their flock, becoming extremely independent at this time."
