|Hi Hulk; where have you ben hiding at the KB?
Sky here with the second part of the series on "THE GABRIEL FOUNDATION" titled "How D.B. a Green-winged Macaw found happiness."
Before I go further, Dixie has a video here on BC- go to page one Rose and Carmela's Performing Conures--it's AWESOME!!!!!
As we learned in part 1, THE G.F.
is located in Aspen, Colorado, so sets the stage for today's blog;
DB was a pet that had escaped or been set free in the area south east of San Francisco, California. How long he had flown free no one was certain but he definitely had mastered the skills of surviving in the urban wilderness. His story begins when he began daily visits to the property surrounding the "KOKO GORILLA FOUNDATION." There, DB ate from the Loquat trees, doing well in the temperate climate.
DB received his name from KOKO the Gorilla famous for her loving and nurturing relationship with a kitten, as well as her extremely high communicative and interactive skills with humans. Koko had a substantial fear of reptiles, and to help her, her caretakers purchased a red toy dinosaur. She named it "RED DEVIL" upon being told it was not going to harm her.
When KOKO and DB met, Koko signed the words "Devil tooth" to him. She was able to recognize the similarities between the horn-coloured beak of the Macaw and a tooth by shape.
Thus the name DB--Devil Beak, was born. DB lived at the KOKO Foundation from the first chance meeting of Macaw and Gorilla for about a year, freely interacting with the large Gorilla. After the first year there, DB started to become withdrawn, depressed and the decision was made to catch him and a staff member would take him into her home to live.
In June 1998 DB was placed with the GF after living 7 years with the new owner. DB had become so depressed that several behavior issues had developed. He had begun to pull out all his feathers on his chest, thighs, back and leg areas. He would scream endlessly, and growl and lunge.
His road to recovery was slow. It was agreed that he had reverted from a pet to being a wild Macaw unsuitable for placement. Staff worked to gain his trust to no avail, the only contact he made was replying to the calls of the 20 resident Macaws that found the GF home. After 90 days of isolation he was introduced into the flock where he quickly made friends with RAMBO, a wild caught male Blue and Gold.
DB found happiness at the Gabriel Foundation who accepted the fact he didn't want further human contact. Today DB has all his feathers back, is healthy, and living out his life safe and protected under the loving care of the Gabriel Foundation.
Tomorrow we will look at the depths one man went to save a Cockatoo.
with my heart filled with love,
