Hi every birdie, SKY here with today's blog. I have entitled this "Perfectly Lovable"
I'd like to begin by thanking every bird for their support of the teams today, and the great fun we all shared in. The Milonga was awesome as usual and all-in-all it has been a GREAT! day.
Today I'd like to introduce a few friends. These lovable birds all have one thing in common. They are all disabled or handicapped in some way. Too often would be adopters over look these less then "perfect" birds for others, yet these birds we will meet have found great, loving homes that over-looked their disabilities.
First I'd like to have you meet, BUDDY. Buddy was an aggressive wild-caught Congo grey. The best guess was that he was 30+ years old when Anastasia met him."It was love at first sight." I have a soft spot of handicapped birds, and there was something about Buddy that drew me. It took months of gently work to get him to allow touch, and even more to get him to step-up. HE lost his sight most likely during transport from being tossed around in the box. He didn't need pity. HE wanted love, scritches and play time and the freedom to explore. He used his beak like a cane and was fast once he got going somewhere.
Luna, a Severe Macaw, became handicapped when her bird sitter's children pulled out her tail feathers and stabbed her eyes with paperclips. Luna was blinded. New owners could not deal with her blindness and were going to euthanize her when an elderly lady spoke up and took Luna in. " She went from a scared and vicious bird to the sweetest, most affectionate one in less then 6 months. She loves to explore, meet new people and can climb without hesitation.
Taylor and Tamara, her owners had a special play gym made with extra branches evenly spaced. Luna immediately chewed them all off.
She moves around it like a pro." Outside she puts her beak down, circles clockwise, then counter-clockwise, then she takes off at top speed, slowing when she senses anything in her path. You'd not know by watching her that she is totally blind.
Tomorrow we will meet a Rosella named Kalioops, and my little buddy Charlie, and learn how and why these birds are "perfectly lovable" and how our parronts can help disabled birds adjust.
