Hi RaneBeau
Thanks to those of you who put my name in your headers, you know who you are!
We are beginning today outside of Dinosaurs in Their Time (DITT from now on) with one of the few casts you will see this month. I put Jane's pic up first so you can see how birdlike she looks! Look at those hips, that stance, those feet! Also, all dinosaurs were bipedal to start with, and this gorgeous Cretaceous babe is still walking on 2 feet! We will be talking about birdlike dinosaurs this month, but we will also discuss those that did not evolve into birds. (Just a side note: In science, the word THEORY means something that is proven {think magnetism}, the word HYPOTHESIS means it's still under investigation: the information we have as scientists verifies the theory of evolution.) So, back to Jane, who is named after the person who funded the expedition to find her. We don't know she's female, but some recent work has actually been able to sex TRex! In some specimens, there is medullary tissue in the thigh, which is a fancy way to say a place filled with collagen where calcium is stored for egg laying. Guess who else stores calcium this way? Ask any hen in your house! Yes, we birds do that! The other notable thing about Jane is we can guess why she died so young. Look at the close up of her foot. Can you see a bump on that closest toe? That's a bone disease, which probably caused her to limp! If a hunter can't hunt, it can't live long. I know there are lots of questions, hope I can answer them as the month goes on. Thanks for your support! More to come, hugs, Gizmo
