Today we are starting our trip through Dinosaurs in Their Time (DITT) with the Triassic material. The Carnegie has a few Triassic specimens behind glass where mom couldn't get a good pic because of the flash, so here are the 2 we got for you today: both are of coelophysis(see-low-FIE-sis), a small, spry, meat eater of the Triassic. Dinosaurs started out small, and this guy is about 2 feet tall at most. You will see him painted on the wall mural in the second pic, and a sample of the bone bed he came from in the first pic. Carnegie scientists found about 250 skeletons of coelophysis all at the same place at Ghost Ranch, New Mexico. They were found at a bend in an ancient river, so there's no telling how they all got there, but the best guess is that's where they washed up after floods. You won't see any skeletons of this guy mounted, though, because his bones are so brittle and fragile (HOLLOW, like ours) that they shatter when removed from the matrix (the rock they are in). He was bipedal, quick, and sharp toothed, with very light weight skull. The skull cast we have to show people is nearly flat, because in fossilization, the skulls of dinos are the most fragile, so they often get twisted, bent, or flattened from the weight of the silt, mud, or whatever helped to preserve them.
