Hi Chaka
Today let's talk pterosaurs! These guys lived alongside the dinos, but were NOT dinosaurs. They were kind of distant cousins, like the crocodilians were. (Dinos/birds, crocodiles, and pterosaurs all belong to the archosaur family.) In the 4th pic in my gallery is a pteranodon, you can see him in the air, with a short tail and really tiny teeth. He was a meat eater. In the first pic, that's a rhamphorynchus, also a flyer but with a long tail and longer teeth. Again, these guys are not dinos. Why not? Well, for one thing, they have no S curve in the neck. Also, they don't have that dino/bird hip structure going up over the backbone. Their hips are extended outward, more like reptiles than dinos/birds. They fly using one finger. They had 4 fingered hands, hard to see in these tiny pics. They walked on 3 and the fourth finger had really long bones. From this finger hung the patagium or wing flap. When they walked on the ground, they folded up that finger and held it upright against their bodies. Most of these guys were small, but some got quite large. It's very rare to find complete skeletons of pterosaurs, but we have several embedded in rock at the Carnegie. Those are the 2nd and 3rd pics. They came from a place in Germany called Sohlnhofen, which used to be an anaerobic lagoon. No oxygen, no plants, no animals in that water, so whatever died and fell in or fell through it just lay on the bottom and got gradually covered over with silt, later to become some fabulous and unusual fossils. More to come on this later. Thank you for your vote, here's a vote and hug for you today. Gizmo
