Hi Peekaboo
Yesterday we learned that the pterosaurs were not dinosaurs, but were flying reptiles. Today, we are going to meet archaeopteryx (ark ee OP ter ix), possibly the first flying dinosaur. You can see a sculpture of him in the second picture. Can you see what's changed? His arms have gotten really long, haven't they? It's hard to see his furcula (wishbone), but it's a U shaped bone above the sternum(chest). He doesn't have a keel like we do, so he probably wasn't a very strong flier, but still, he was the first! How do we know he flew? Well, we don't really, but look at the first pic. That's a lithographic fossil cast (the original is in Berlin) of a complete archaeopteryx, and in the stone are definite flight feather imprints on each arm/wing. There are also feathers on that long tail. He has the diapsid skull of a dino, and sharp teeth, so he was a meat eater, but at his size, he was probably eating bugs. People walking through the exhibit often miss these fliers, so mom always points them out on tours. Thanks for the vote, here's one for you along with a hug. See you tomorrow for more of the tour.
