Hi Spot
Today we are still in the Jehol group from China. Many paleontologists wanted more proof that birds are dinos, and Liaoning province gave them that proof. There are avian and non avian dinosaurs there, most of them feathered. The little guy in the first pic (sorry about the glare) is the fossil of the model in the second pic. She is caudipteryx (cod DIP ter ix), an oviraptor. That's really a misnomer, because oviraptor means egg thief. When they first found this dino's fossils, they were near eggs, so the scientists thought they were stealing eggs for food. The ones they have found recently in China were sitting on those same kinds of eggs, brooding them when they died. So, this was another one of those quick, hot blooded dinos in our family. Keep in mind though that this one couldn't fly either. Remember the guy yesterday with no flight feathers? Well, Caudipteryx has some better developed primaries, but the wings are still too short and the tail is much too long to let him get up into the air. One scientist (Scott Sampson) says that the feathers on its arms helped in WAIR (wind assisted inclined running), allowing this animal to get up into a tree as a way to escape predation.
