Hi, Mackenzie, Let's see, mom seems to recall that dad would train the hawk in about half hour intervals, once a day or so, not necessarily everyday. Not sure how long, perhaps a few weeks? Sometimes he would just take it out and walk around so it would get used to sitting with him. This was over 20 years ago now so mom can't quite recall, heehee. Dad worked full time then, but since he got off work at 3pm it was always light when he got home to do training after work and weekends too. After the hawk would fly back and forth dad trained it to 'come' to the lure. Mom can't quite recall what that was made of, but dad would wave it in the air above him so the bird can see it and in conjunction with the whistle learns to return. There's other training in there mom can't recall since dad did all that, but that's the basics. The parronts well remember the '89 quake. How scary for your dad to have been on the freeway earlier in the day that collapsed. Our area is pretty solid, not built on landfill like some areas, but all those aftershocks were really nerve wracking. Just glad the power came back on within a day and that water worked too. Think those that live back east have grown up with those conditions and know what to do. It's the transplants that flounder without the years of knowledge of previous storms and venture out or do other things they shouldn't. Whenever we have even a tiny shaker those who are new to CA really freak out. The natives or long time residents just shrug and say it's just another day. Have a great day, wing hugs, beak kisses and a vote, Pearl and Silver. |
