Hi Cydney
It's Popeye.
Catlina Island is about 26 miles from shore to shore. It's actually privately owned. At one time, the Wrigleys owned it but now it's owned by the Catlint conservitory assn. The only part of the island that can be publicly owned is in the city of Avalon, whch is about 10% of the island. They have a grocery store that delivers and a post office that does not. They didn't have dial telephones until the late 70s. The main mode of transportataion is bikes, notor scooters and golf carts. You must own property and live on the island for over 10 years before you are allowed to have a golf cart. Don't even think of owning a car. Not meny people have them.
All groceries and other supplies, including mail, are flown in, twice a week, from Long Beach airport to the Catalina Airport in the Sky. They use old, Douglas DC-3 airplains to fly everything in. They pay the Southern California Gas Company for their gas, electricity, and water. The Gas Co. operates a water desalination plant which supplies about 30% of their water. The rest is brought in by ship. Rain supplies a very small amount.
The main tourest area is a small, three block area right on the beach, called Cresant St. It is blocked to all but foot traffic.
Law enforcement is supplied by the Los Angeles County Sheriff and the Los Angeles County Fire Dept has one engian company and one truck company on the island. LA County also supplies the life guards, called Bay Watch Avalon. Remember the TV show, Bay Watch? It's not uncommon for the fire dept to fly a helicopter over to take sick and injured people to a mainland hospital.
Well, that's Catalina Island, in a nutshell. Oh, one more little known fact, Marilyn Monroe grew up on the island, in a foster home.
Hope your day was good.
