Hi Ms Alex
here's a little bit about the jockeys ... hope you find the rest of my blogs interesting too.
Day 8
Pound for pound, jockeys are among the world’s strongest athletes. Tipping the scales lightly between 105 - 112 lbs., they tightly grip 1,200 pound Thoroughbreds as they thunder around racetracks at speeds of nearly 40 miles an hour. Crouching in a tight position over their horse, balancing lightly on their toes, jockeys are shot from the starting gates as their horses lunge forward. Looking for openings, steering without brakes, and getting bumped are all part of the job. A quick lean just inches to the side could result in a fatal, career-ending fall. These men and women are highly skilled, competitive athletes who sometimes compete in more than six races a day. Riding a thin line between risk and reward with percentages of the winnings only going to the top finishers. A victory in the Kentucky Derby ensures a jockey’s name in the record books. For many, a win in the Derby is the ultimate accomplishment.
