Hi Ms Alex
Talk to you tomorrow...
DAY 18

Derby Bits ~~~~~~~~~
In 1905 only three horses ran in the Kentucky Derby, the smallest field in the race’s
history. Agile was the winner.
The fastest Derby time was set in 1973 by the famed Triple crown winner Secretariat. His time was 1:59 2/5seconds for the 1 and 1/4 miles.
The first gray horse to win the Derby was Determine, in 1954.
The first live radio broadcast of the Kentucky Derby was in 1925.
In 1952 the Kentucky derby was covered on national television for the first time.
The governor of Kentucky is the only person permitted to present the trophy to the winner.
The oldest jockey to win was Bill Shoemaker. He was 54 when he rode Ferdinand to victory in 1986.
In 2010 Calvin Borel set a new record, being the first jockey to win 3 out of 4 consecutive Kentucky Derbies.
Some of the most famous horses in history never ran in the Kentucky Derby, including Man o’ War, Seabiscuit and John Henry.
The Kentucky Derby has been postponed only once. That was in 1945 during World War 11. That year it was run in June instead of the traditional May.
In 2005, the purse distribution for the Derby was changed, so that the horse that finished
5th would receive a share of the purse. Previously only the first four finishers did so.
