As far as other birds go...
It depends on how large you are willing to go. Personally, I don't have the space, time or resources to house anything bigger than a conure. (although conures can get screechy and be LOUD!). I hear quaker parrots are neat birds ($200.00 - 450.00). I'd also advise against lovebirds, as they are aggressive as well, though if you are lucky, you might be able to get a sweet one. I've talked to pet breeders and they do warn about lovebirds injuring other birds.

Cockatiels are a great addition to any flock. In my experience, they are quiet, calm, gentle and curious little fellows. Also, the boys can talk and whistle. They are also easily affordable.

Parrotlets are also great. They do require a lot of attention though, so as long as someone is home to play with them, they are happy. Picasso can get loud when he gets bored, so it is important to keep them stimulated. He is great with all the family members and happily sits and talks with all of us. There are plenty of youtube videos of parrotlets playing with children, so I wouldn't worry about that. Just good training as a baby helps a lot as the bird gets older. Toys are also always good for busy beaks.

If you try, I'm sure you can see what sort of birds are available in your area :)
