Hello every birdie
For my BOTM campaign I am going to be using my Star Trek Enterprise shuttlecraft, the Galileo, to take us on far-flung adventures. From the very bottom of Earth’s deepest seas to the far reaches of the Universe we will go.
Dec 23: Ms BBs BOTM campaign. All of your votes are deeply appreciated. If I don’t thank you every
day its only because there is only so much time in one day.
We are now going to a planet that was a planet but now is not a planet. How dos that happen?? Yes, I mean Pluto. We will be a little over 4 billion miles from our sun. We will be at Warp 8 for about 19 min. Warp 8 is 8 times the speed of light. The speed of light in a vacuum is recognized world wide as 186,282 miles per second (299,792 kilometers per second). So we will be traveling at, let me cipher this a minute.
(DAD, come help me with this cipheren, I don’t have nearly enough toes!) DAD here, its 1,690,456 ft per second or 91,422,360 miles per minute. Yes, that’s over 91 million. Any birdie want to check the math for me?
Pluto is the smallest of the planets? at only 2274 km in diameter. It is also smaller than many of the other planets moons. Pluto's orbit is highly tilted (17 degrees) relative to the plane of the ecliptic. Pluto rotates clockwise which is the opposite direction of most of the other planets. Venus and Uranus also travel in this direction. This leads some scientists to say that Pluto was a stray moon drifting through space when it was captured by our suns gravity. Even though Pluto is not a planet it dos have 5 moons. Hydra, Kerberos, Styx, Nix & Charon are there names.
Pluto has not yet been visited by a spacecraft because it was not in the path of Voyager 2. Even the Hubble Space Telescope can resolve only the largest features on its surface. A spacecraft called New Horizons was launched in January 2006. If all goes well it should reach Pluto in 2015.
Dos any birdie want to put on a space suit and walk on Pluto? Just don’t bring any fleas back in with you !!!
Its real cold way out here too cause the surface temperature on Pluto varies between about -235 and -210 C (38 to 63 K). Any birdie want to make ice cream?
Well that’s all of the planets and a non-planet that was a planet called Pluto. No we don’t have a planet name Goofy !!!
But we now have Eris that was discovered by US astronomers Mike Brown, Chad Trujillo and David Rabinowitz in 2005. Eris is slightly bigger than Pluto and is in the Kuiper belt of asteroids. Ceres, the largest object in the Kuiper asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter is out there also. These three bodies have come to be called Dwarf Planets.
By the time we get back home it will be dinner/supper time. There is snacks and juice bottles in the storage lockers so help yourselves.
