Ok, back into the shuttle. No need for coats or water bottles today. We will all be staying in the shuttle on this trip also.
Today we are off to explore the Oort cloud, a vast area of comets and debris that never formed into planets about 9 trillion miles from the sun.
Scientists call this distance roughly 50,000 AU, (1 astronomical unit = the distance from the Earth to our sun) or nearly a light-year, from our Sun. Warp drive is a must on this trip.
The Oort cloud was named after the Dutch astronomer Jan Oort in 1950 & is mostly icy comets & other left over debris from the formation of our Solar System. Most of this debrie is frozen water, ammonia, and methane with some rock as cores.
Scientists’ believe comet ISON, which went around our sun on Thurs. the 28th, 2013, passing as close 684,000 miles, came from the Oort cloud. Two Russian amateur astronomers, Vitali Nevski and Artyom Novichonok discovered this comet last year with help from the International Scientific Optical Network.
Scientist’s give its chances for survival at forty percent. It could disintegrate. But if it does survive, ISON will be visible in early December without a telescope.
Haley’s comet is a *short-term comet* that comes from this reign of space. Most of our humans have had the opportunely to see Haley’s comet at least once. More on Haley’s comet in a couple of days.
