Hi Mango
DAY 19
How are u sweetie? Today, we will cover CONCUSSIONS & DIARRHEA (I guess we can call it "heads or tails")?!
CONCUSSION
A concussion is caused by a blow to the head & could lead to unconsciousness. This type of injury frequently occurs when a bird crashes into walls, windows, etc when flying freely through the house. Place ur injured bird in a dark quiet place & consciousness occurs, or ur bird does not rapidly return to normal, emergency vet care is critical.
DIARRHEA
Diarrhea can cause dehydration & a loss of nutrients. Diarrhea is actually uncommon in pet birds. Excessive urine is much more common & frequently mistaken for diarrhea. Remember, if the stool is solid & formed, it IS NOT diarrhea. Increased urine will, however, cause the stool to become wet & slightly loose. Causes of diarrhea can include diet (sudden change in type of food or spoiled food), intestinal infection, poisoning, ingestion of a foreign object, parasites, generalized diseases, egg laying or egg-binding, overtreatment with antibiotics & stress.
SIGNS -- The signs of diarrhea are loose, watery & unformed stool.
HOME TREATMENT -- If ur bird has diarrhea, remove any non-food items which she may be chewing. Feed a bland diet of soft fresh foods, such as pasta, rice, beans & cooked oatmeal. U might consider giving Pepto-Bismol or Kaopectate in the following doses:
Finches/canaries: 4 drops every 4 hrs
"Budgies": 6 drops every 4 hrs
Cockatiels: 10 drops (0.5cc) every 4 hrs
Amazons: 20 drops (1cc) every 4 hrs
Cockatoos & Macaw: 30 drops (1.5cc) every 4 hrs
Remember, any treatment offered at home will delay more specific treatment by ur vet. This time delay may be very significant if bird has a serious health problem.
VET TREATMENT -- Because diarrhea is only the result of a problem & not a diagnosis vets need to try & determine the underlying cause to resolve the problem. Diagnostic tests, such as stool analysis &/or culture, X-rays & blood tests, may be recommended.
See u tomorrow! THANK U FOR UR SUPPORT!!!
Love & a vote
Tia
