POISONING -- HOME TREATMENT
First, try to determine what may have poisoned ur pet. Birds can be poisoned by inhaling fumes, by ingesting a poisonous plant or chemical, or by coming in contact with a poison on their skin.
WHAT YOU CAN DO AT HOME:
IF BY ACIDS, ALKALIS, OR PETROLEUM PRODUCTS: make the bird swallow mulk, mixed with Pepto-Bismol, egg white, or olive oil. DO NOT induce vomiting!!
IF BY OTHER: Induce vomiting. Use mustard & water solution put at back of the throat.
IF KNOWN: Call poison control center. (If burned, SEE BURNS, blog #18).
Stabilizing the bird is most important, especially if she is in shock (blog #11), convulsing (blog #22), or having breathing problems (blog #17). A complete physical & general supportive care will be administered. If ingested, medication can be given to reduce the absorption of the poison into the bloodstream.
You can help prevent poisoning in ur bird by following these steps:
*Make sure food & water is always fresh.
*Wash all fruits & vegetables before serving them to ur bird.
*Keep potentially poisonous household products out of ur bird's reach.
*Do not let ur bird fly free in the kitchen or bathroom.
*Do not use products with strong fumes, such as cleaning products, around ur bird.
*Do not use fungicides, herbicides, insecticides or rodenticides around ur bird without consulting ur avian vet.
*Do not let ur bird near ur houseplants.
*Do not leave cigarettes or other tobacco products where ur bird can reach them. Ideally,do not smoke around ur bird, either.
*Do not use nonstick cookware because overheated nonstick items can emit potentially fatal fumes for ur bird.
*Immediately consult ur avian vet. If u suspect any potential poisoning problems in ur pet.
Tomorrow, we will cover DANGEROUS FOODS & POISONOUS PLANTS. Sweet dreams sweetie, see u tomorrow!
Love & a vote
