The Apple Coring Race Capt. Sam Vs. Riley Ann
Pirate Spot is swabbing the galley floor after the last of the stragglers are finishing up their meals. Capt. SamIAm closes the Capt’s Qrtr’s door with
Cabin Boy, Peppino with him. Peppy eagerly asks Capt. Sam about the last apple coring race. He is most interested in what happened to all the cores?
Capt. Sam has told & re-told the story several times to Peppino, & yet, he still has more questions. They enter the galley to see Riley Ann with a bushel of
apples. She is dividing them evenly into two different bowls. She has two more empty bowls stacked together waiting on the large table. The crew is starting to gather together to watch this ‘apple coring race’ & begin to fill the long tables & benches where they eat their meals. Peppino sits at the very end of the bench to be closest to Capt. Sam. He’s small & would have a hard time seeing over the crowd. Peppino holds a four leaf clover in his small talons! He knows it will bring Sam luck! Peppino looks at Miss Riley Ann & the confidence she exudes & thinks to himself, “Yeah, good thing I have this 4 leaf clover! Capt. Sam’s gonna need it!”

Capt. Sam pulls out his own apple corer. He’s been practicing for a year since he was so soundly trounced by Miss Riley Ann the last time. Capt. Sam asks Riley Ann, “Have ye been practicing?” She shakes her head, “Nope.” “Has ye been thinking’ about a rematch?” Again, she shakes her head, “Nope.” “Ye didn’t think about it at all?” She thinks hard, “ No…not even once!” Capt. Sam stands there where Riley Ann perches with his beak gaped open. Miss Riley Ann looks at the captain, “OH! Sir, we’ve had a few flies, you best close….” Before she can finish Sam begins to cough & gag, yes, a fly has flown down his throat!

Mstr Gardner Mayo & Chef Scion come in & take a seat. Marigold & Dandy quickly follow as Spot puts up his mop & flips off the galley’s light. They all are so eager to be rooting for Miss Riley Ann with hopes that she will win them all a whole day & night off from any galley duties!

Capt. Sam calls First Mate Polly to count how many apples each of them have to make sure & show everybirdy that it’s a fair challenge. Polly hurriedly comes forward & begins counting the apples in each bowl! A whopping 32 apples each they will be coring for some applelishous dishes by Chef Scion. Sam smiles thinking about those. “SNAP out of it!” Sam tells himself. Capt. Sam calls to Miss Sugar, “We needs a third party who has no horse in this race. Would ye do the favor of saying ‘go’ for us?” Capt Sam looks to Miss Riley Ann, “Are ye comfy with that, Miss Riley?” Miss Riley smiles & nods. She is super ready!! Capt. Sam squirms a bit & gets on his mark.

Miss Sugar steps up beside them, smiling at the crew that are all watchin’ at the edge of their perches. Miss Sugar uses her hanky. She begins, “On your perches, get ready to core, when you think you’re
