What got me into birds....
Ready for a long blog?! LOL! This is how it's the complete story of Bella the budgie. Okay, it was the 4 year anniversary of my dad's death and I had made plans with a friend to spend the morning with her so I wouldn't feel so sad. She knew how important it was to me and she would never have cancelled unless it was over the top, life threatening. Thank goodness it wasn't life threatening but her father in law had a minor accident that morning and needed her help. She had no choice but to cancel. I was really bummed! My son wanted to cheer me up and suggested we take a walk to the park the way we used to with my dad. I reluctantly agreed and off we went. About three quarters of the way to the park, I turned to Eli and said, "I feel opa with us." He looked at me wide eyed and said, "I was about to say the same thing!" We continued on and decided to sit on the bench when we got there. As soon as we sat down, we noticed a yellow bird. We thought it might be a gold finch and I said to Eli, "Opa loved birds. Maybe he sent that one for us to look at and cheer us up." A few minutes later, Eli decided to get up and get a closer look. Bella then hopped over and jumped on his shoe and began playing with his shoe laces. I couldn't believe it and went over to look. It was a budgie! At that time, we had no birds and I didn't know what to do. I strongly felt that she was a gift from my dad but I had no idea how to get this bird home or how to take care of it once I did. Just then, four boys came by on bikes and one was holding a box with new shoes in it. I asked them to stop and asked if it would be okay for us to have the box he was carrying. That boy had two budgies himself and was able to tell us that Bella was a girl and he helped us get her safely in the box. How convenient! We brought her home and then went immediately to the pet store for supplies. I was trying to decide between two cages. When my father was dying there seemed to always be these two songs playing on the radio. One was "Sour Girl" by STP and the other was "I Try" by Macy Gray. Just as I was looking at the second and larger cage, the Macy Gray song came on and I started to cry. The radio stations hadn't played that song in four years. Why were they playing it now? I knew dad was telling me that the second cage was the right one for his gift to us. He must've known that we would need a flight cage because the flock would grow. I don't know if you've heard that Macy Gray song but it goes, "I try to say goodbye but I choke. I try to walk away but I stumble. Though I try to hide it, it's clear, my world crumbles when you are not near." That's so how I felt when my dad died. I felt like such an idiot standing in the pet store crying. A sales person asked if I was okay and the whole story started pouring out and by the time I was done, half the customers were listening and tearing up, too. I still miss my dad so much. I was such a daddy's girl! I'm sure you can relate to the idea
