Double recessives
Well, Ziggy, to answer your questions, based on what Marc told me, it really has to do with the fact that we have double recessive genes on EVERYTHING.

Cockatiel genetics are very complicated and even with the scientists, they are figuring out probabilities, not definites. Marc said, "always believe the bird." That means that all the math in the world won't always produce the right answer. Chicks will come out completely different than what the science says they are supposed to. The existance of a particular being doesn't have to obey scientific prediction. :)

But the short answer has to be the double recessive. and I think the pearl is a sex linked recessive, so it makes sense the girls would be pearls and the guys would be greys.
