Hello Logan!!
Hello there my friend! Mommy asked me to fill you in a little on the pet shop birdies and what is going on. First of all, we are fairly close to Marshall. I believe it's about an hour away, and we would LOVE any help we could get for publicity!! If your mommy wants to help and see if her friend wants to do a story or something, that would be incredible! Mommy's cell phone number is 320-237-5569 (her name is Angela) and you can call her if you want to, or you could give the number to your mommy's friend too. Well, mommy has been in contact with the local animal control. Unfortunately, the rules in Minnesota are very vague when it comes to birds. All that is required is food, water, and shelter. No requirements on cage size, overcrowding, or even what to feed. Most of the birds in this particular shop are on only seeds, no pellets, no fresh food. The animal control has been very nice and even though they can't actually enforce anything, they have stopped in several times times and spoken to the employees and hope that just their presence will help some, but unfortunately there have been no changes. Mommy was so angry cuz she saw a sick love bird and went to tell the employee and the girl walked back with her and said..."Oh she's fine, she's looked like that since she got here." This poor birdies feathers were in very poor condition, she was dirty, kind of listless, and her eyes were dull and half closed! If that's the way she came, that poor birdie has been sick since she got there! And she's in a tiny cage with 9 other lovies. Oohhh, mommy was angry! She called the store manager and he thanked her, but she doesn't know what was done about it. She doesn't really want to think about it. Mommy is now thinking about trying to change legislation in MN to have stricter requirements on birds for sale. She doesn't really know where to start though. She joined the state bird club, but it's two and a half hours away, so she doesn't get to too many meetings. She just got the idea as she was sitting here to try and get Bird Talk involved in helping change legislation. We don't know...mommy's getting a little frustrated that she can't do more faster, so if you have any ideas, PLEASE let us know! Otherwise, we will keep you posted on what's going on...thanks so much for asking! Have a great day! BBFF!! ~Huey
