~~ As they pass by Boat 7, Rio climbs over the railing separating 2nd from 3rd class, directly in front of Titanic’s gymnasium, and comes up behind the group. He taps Ruby on the wing and as she turns, pulls her into the gymnasium. They are alone. He takes her by the shoulders. “Ruby—“ “Rio,” she interrupts, ”this is impossible. I can’t…I am engaged to Romeo!” Rio ignores her and continues “Ruby, you’re no picnic…you’re a spoiled little brat even, but under that you’re a strong, pure heart, and you’re the most amazingly astounding girlbird I’ve ever known, and—You’re amazing…and I know I have nothing to offer you, Ruby. I know that. But I’m involved now. I can’t turn away.” Ruby feels tears coming to her eyes. “I have to get back. They’ll miss me. Please, Rio, for both our sakes, leave me alone.” ~~~~ As Titanic steams onward, in the dusk light, Rio is right at the apex of the bow, his favorite spot, feeling the chill wind over his feathers, trying to clear his head. He hears a voice behind him. “Hello Rio.” He turns to see Ruby standing there. “I;ve changed my mind.” ~~ Rio extends his wing to her. “Give me your wing.” He puts his flight feathers on her waist, as if he is going to kiss her. “Now close your eyes. Step up and hold onto the railing. Do you trust me?” “I trust you Rio.” Rio presses her gently to the rail, standing right behind her. Then he takes her wings and gently spreads them until they are fully extended out to either side. “Alright. Open your eyes.” ~~ **Ruby gasps!** “I’m flying—Rio!” |
