From Dusty's Mom ~
First of all I want to apologize for this being a generic message to all of you, and there were so many, who offered condolences on the sudden, unexpected death of Dusty. I am truly grateful for your kind and comforting words of support. It is only recently that I am able to sit at the computer to say thank you and to talk about Dusty's death.

I will not get the official report or Dusty's ashes back until next week. Although it pains me to discuss this, I feel it's important for the well being of your own birds to know what happened. Dusty died of lung cancer. For a bird that had no feathers, I'm shocked that I didn't feel or notice a very hard little lump under one of his wings which was a cancer that spread to his lungs. I'm shocked because I was always caressing him everywhere, but since he was all "bone", if I did at one time touch it, I would have thought it was a part of his featherless body. My husband and I have been "on and off" smokers for several years but we never smoked in the house and never handled the birds until our hands were washed. Although the vet said, like people who never smoked or was around smoke, lung cancer is not unheard of in birds who live in even perfect conditions. Still, in the back of my mind, I have to wonder if the people who previously had Dusty might have smoked around him, although I realize there could be other causes as well. He only started to show signs of distress the evening before I took him to the vet and by then it was too late. I'm sharing this with all of you because there could be signs of illness that we're not aware of and yet could be if we just take the time to pay attention to the little things. There are no words to describe the devastation I feel but I know I must go on. For my husband, for my birds and for my own well being. I hope to be back on BC chattering and laughing with all of you soon. Please check your birds frequently, love them as much as possible and enjoy them while you can. Thank you to all of you. Love, Dusty's mom, Cheryl
