Gene here. Mom takes in usually the smaller birds...tiels, budgies, finches... because there doesn't seem to be anyone to do them. So it's just whenever the need arises. Mom will pick up a bigger one if the main lady can't. She lives about 4o mi away and so sometimes it's hard for her to drive all the way here or around us to get a bird. Mom also will pick up the food for the rescue.
If your mom is interested and your dad is tolerant your mom could contact the local bird club or humane shelter and ask about fostering. It is very rewarding mom says. But I know how hard it is for her to give up the fosterlings. gotta fly. v4u
