Playpens and indoor voices
Yeah, the indoor voice is kind of hard to master, but I'm sure you can do it. Mom helped me master the technique. Everytime I mumbled in a low little voice where Mom could still hear me, she'd talk to me and pay attention, especially if it sounded anything like that silly human talk they're always repeating to us. If I got too loud, Mom just kept going about her day as usual. If I was really quiet for a while, Mom was sure to stop by where I was and tell me what a good bird I was (and maybe give me a treat if I waved hello). After lots of practice, I figured it out. I'm sure you could do it, too. Still, I think its necessary for our health to clear out our lungs and really have a good screeching session every now and then, don't you? We have three gyms and playpens scattered about the apartment. Our first is our favorite. Dad made it for us out of driftwood he found, cleaned and sanded for us. It looks a lot like those ones you see in the magazines made out of manzanita. He made it out of two separate pieces of really curvy wood that he fixed onto an easy clean platform he also made (with wheels on the bottom to move around to the scene of action in the house). Its about 4 1/2 ft tall and 2 1/4 ft wide. There are a few places Mom can add a toy to as well. We spend most of our time while Mom is home playing there (although unfortunately it doesn't have a place for food and water (mom thought we'd get it too dirty while playing) so we have to take play breaks and go to our cages for drinks and snacks. We have a very basic stand by the kitchen table to hang out at during meal times that has a bowl for each of us to eat at (Gabby and I don't like to share when it comes to food). Finally, the playpen is pretty cool. Mom has that in her bedroom by the dresser on a nightstand. It has ladders, swings, perches, toys, and all sorts of cool things to entertain an energetic bird. Mom calls it a playpen because its not tall like the others. One day when Mom gets a house she has plans to make us a true play pen in the house, an aviary she calls it I think, where we could really spread our wings and play to our hearts content in a big space. Have you ever been in an aviary? I hear they are really cool. Like Disney World for birds. I can't wait. You'll have to let me know how your new house is, thats so exciting. I hope all goes well. Take care.
