In Sickness And In Health :>
Hello my BC friends ~ A gentle reminder to all of the importance of "bird watching" for your parrot's health and well-being. Nani was not herself Saturday - subdued, a little off her feed ... knowledge and experience with the temperament of my Too had me keep a weather eye on this girl. By Sunday I noticed her droppings seemed off, her demeanor still quiet. A gentle examination of her body showed her tummy a bit distended, her vent a bit swollen. I've made a point of familiarizing myself with the general characteristics of my flock and pay attention to body conformation, nares, plumage, activity level, feces, etc as a matter of routine health assessment. I knew Nani had something brewing - Often with parrots, by the time we realize they are ill they can be REALLY ill, so my habit of physical observation paid off. Fortunately one of our avian vets was working on Mother's Day, so in we went - I knew to collect a recent stool sample, so that came with. CBC, Lab work and X-Rays flowed. X-Rays showed no egg binding (Thank God), as she's been hormonal for quite a while. The lab slide DID show an increased bacteria in her stool. Nani was immediately put on an antibiotic, which I am administering at home (eye dropper + 1 ml nasty stuff = unhappy Too but she is already responding). Too hens can get a little chubby in maturity - and she came to me on a Fiesta Maxx diet, which I now understand has too much fat via safflower and sunflower seeds for Cockatoos. She is probably 100 g overweight, so she will go on a diet conversion which will wean her off the Fiesta Maxx and on to an appropriate pellet mix along with her fresh food. Another observation I want to share is: Nani and the flock get fresh fruits and veggies daily, but she'd' been gravitating more toward corn, and less from the 'good stuff' in the bowl. Like anyone else, TOO MANY CARBS MAKE YOU CHUBBY! We are blessed to have Dr. Brian Speer (THE Brian Speer, known in Avian circles as one of the most knowledgeable Bird Docs in the world) rock throwing distance from our home, so Nani will be in the best of hands. I'm asking all of you to put your wings together and pray that there is not a more serious, life threatening illness facing Nani - Kidney problems can be serious in Cockatoos, and if so, incurable :( I will post CBC results when I get them.
