Hi Piper
It's nice to meet you. HOpe we can stay in touch after this hectic month, I think my mom would have a lot to talk about with yours.
Hi everyone! The pic today is of Martha, the resident great horned owl. She is a bird who came to us a few years ago with a wing injury that was a couple of weeks old, well on its way to being completely healed. In a mammal it's possible to rebreak an injured bone and set it properly, but in birds, with the hollow strutted bones they have, it's too big a risk to try to break and reset it, so Martha's wing was allowed to heal in that lowered position. She is not in pain, and has been a great asset to the center.Martha has been on many education programs and to lots of information tables in her time, but perhaps the most important job she does for the center is to raise great horned owl babies. In her time with the center, she's fostered babies nearly every summer, taking time off her rounds to be a stay at home mom for us. One summer she had 3 owlets from different nests and of different ages which she successfully raised to be released. This summer, she has one baby that is nearly fully feathered now, and almost ready to go. When mom took her trainee in to clean the cage today, the baby flew at them! He was trying to protect his 'mom' from them. He will go into the big flight cage soon, to make sure he can hunt successfully before he gets released. She's done a great job again this summer! Here's a hug and vote today, Willie
