Hi BeGe No, that's not a native snake you're looking at, it's Dante, our ball python. We like to use native animals for our education programs, but let's face it, most of the snakes in PA are tiny! We do have black racers and blacksnakes, not to mention a couple poisonous varieties, but most of ours are milk snake size or garter snake size. Anyway, we use Dante for education programs because he's easy to see from the whole room, and the handler doesn't have to walk with him. Dante has a scarred belly from a previous owner who had a reptile rock for him, but no place where he could cool down if he wanted. He was severely burned at one point. This is why he was donated to the center, we think. He's healed now, and lives in a lovely enclosure. While most of our meat eating animals are fed dead food, the snakes are given live prey. Dante eats about every 2 weeks. Ball pythons are not native to the US, but they are good pets because they grow to about 4 1/2 feet and stop growing any longer. This means a person has an idea about how large the habitat should be when they buy that cute little snake. Thanks for your continued support! Here's a hug and a vote today. Willie |
