Hi BeGe
Okay, as you noticed yesterday, we're in the herps corner now! (Where reptiles and amphibians live!) Our education turtles live outdoors for the summer, in a lovely enclosure built for them by Eagle scouts, so we may not have a pic of them, since they bury themselves in the mud. Today you are looking at a pic of Sal, the Eastern Tiger salamander. We do get salamanders and frogs from time to time to care for there, but Sal is a permanent resident of the center. He has been there since 2001, before mom started volunteering. He was being sold illegally through the newspaper, and our director bought him and set him up properly at the center. As you might recall, it's illegal in PA to have any wild animal as a pet without the proper licenses and permits. Sal is aging, now, and slowing down quite a bit, but he's had a great life there. His habitat is divided into a watery half and a muddy half, so he can spend time wherever he wants. He gets fed mealworms every day if he wants them, too. He has a log to hide under, so his living space is just like it would be in the wild. Eastern tiger salamanders have been extirpated from PA, so Sal is the last of his kind living in the state. For those who don't know that word, extirpated means extinct in this area. They do live elsewhere on the east coast, but they've lost too much natural habitat here to survive. Thanks for coming by, see you tomorrow with another hug and vote. Willie
