Hi BeGe That was a killdeer! Description Date & Time Edit Delete Let's detour to the treatment room today, where a litter of young possums has been admitted. As you can see, these guys and gals are ready to be out of the pouch, but not quite ready for release yet. They have actually been at the center for a few weeks, growing together, and today they will be examined and separated from each other in preparation for their life in the wild. The center will keep each one in a separate cage for a week or 2, until they reach release weight, then let them go. At this age, baby possums are traveling on mom's back in the wild, learning what to eat and what to avoid. The center will give them the proper nutrition in the form of food they'd encounter in the wild, along with kibble for some protein until their release. Contrary to belief, adult opossums cannot hang by a tail, but these little ones can. Opossums use their prehensile tails as a fifth paw, for helping them get around and carry grasses into a hollow to sleep. Hugs and a vote for you from Willie and some very cute babies. |
