Reasons A Bird Vocalizes

Some of the reasons why your bird makes noise

By Rebecca Sweat

Senegal, bird behavior, bird noises
Work to develop a distinct contact call with your bird so it can locate you when you are not in the room with it. Senegal/Courtesy Terri Carlson, Illinois

1. Bird wants attention, lonely

2. Hunger/thirst

3. Your bird's Contact Call (locating other flock members)

4. Mimicking other birds in the flock

5. Bird is practicing talking, whistling or singing

6. Bird is frightened or startled

7. Bird is calling for its mate or a mate

8. Bird is alerting the flock to wake up and forage for food

9. Bird is alerting the flock that it’s time for bed

10. Bird is alerting the flock to danger

Note: You are now the bird’s flock member.

As with young children, it's easy to differentiate between a bird's calls. My bird's cages are all in the living room which has a window that faces our driveway. When any vehicle pulls into our driveway, I have an instant alarm system!

Out of all the 10 my birds usually "talk" for the following reasons:

1. Bird wants attention, lonely
2. Your bird's Contact Call (locating other flock members)
3. Mimicking other birds in the flock
4. Bird is practicing talking, whistling or singing
5. Bird is frightened or startled (usually only happens when they're in the dark)
6. Bird is calling for its mate or a mate
7. Bird is alerting the flock that it’s time for bed

For any reason they would never call for:

Hunger/thirst

Bird is alerting the flock to danger
