Pair bonding or “mate bonding” is the formation of a bond between two animals for the purpose of procreation. In companion parrots, the definition is likely the same as far as the parrot is concerned, despite what the bird’s owners might think.

If a pair bond has been allowed to form between a person and a parrot, the person must take immediate steps to alter the relationship from a pair bond to a teacher-student bond. A pair bond between pet parrot and person generally results in serious frustration for the bird because the person is unable to follow through. This frustration often leads to excessive screaming, aggression and/or feather destruction.
