BIRD TALK In A Book?
By Jessica Pineda
Jessica Pineda is the associate editor of BIRD TALK Magazine and BirdChannel.com. Read her thoughts on all things bird in The Parrot Birder.
Patricia Sund, the “Memo To Parker & Pepper” columnist, is writing a book called Parrot Nation (her blog is here!) and part of her book is going to involve writing about the BIRD TALK team on our day-to-day work. When she first told me this, I was like, “Oh boy, we’re going to bore your readers.”
That’s not to say we don’t have fun here at BTHQ — we’re always coming up with new, fun, exciting ideas for the magazine and website. For example, back in March(ish), we were meeting to plan online content for the website when Laura said, “You know what would be awesome? A summer camp for birds.” In July 2009, we launched Camp Birdie and it was a blast!
But a lot of our day-to-day work involves copy editing, meetings, website work, meetings, talking to bird experts, meetings, magazine work, meetings — typical office work. But in between our many meetings and creative brainstorming sessions, we also blog, tweet, Facebook (can that be used as a verb?), cook bird-friendly recipes, go to bird shows and hit our local bird store to play with the babies.
So maybe we won’t be too boring. I’m sure Patricia can write about some of the funnier moments like when I’m caught dancing to music I’m listening to on my iPod. Or, when Melissa Kauffman, editorial director comes by and says, “Jessica!” causing me to (literally) jump out of my chair. (I’m not in trouble — she usually has a great bird idea to tell me.)
I’d like to show you this picture I found on the Internet. It’s a cardinal feeding its chick, and the chick looks like it’s saying, “Feed me more!” And the parent is sighing. I think we bird owners can relate when our birds stare us down for another bite of whatever is on our plates.

Oh, for a little cross promotion here: If you like pet rats (which you should!), check out the blog written by my best friend, Shellyane Bryan, over at SmallAnimalChannel.com. She dislikes birds, but when she was at my place on a vacation, she gave Garth, my Meyer’s parrot, a scritch, to my utter amazement.
