Bird Knowledge By Proxy

By Laura Doering, Editor of BIRD TALK and
Join in on Laura's fun and experiences of bird ownership, and share in her adventures as the editor of BIRD TALK, the world’s most widely read pet bird magazine, in Wayward Feathers.

This is what’s referred to as Bird Talk’s “ship week.” That means the next issue is being prepped for the printer. There are photo captions to write, copyedits to do, final edits, then final proofing, and so on and so on, until you get the satisfaction of delivering a neat stack of final copies to our production coordinator, who then delivers it to pre-flight. It’s a multi-department collaboration in the truest sense.

What I find fascinating is that even though the other department personnel aren’t bird people, they know more about pet birds than a lot of bird owners. After all, they literally proof the magazine from cover to cover. That’s a lot of bird knowledge gained month after month. I estimate that after a couple of years on the job, we could “graduate” some real bird experts around here. In fact, perhaps I’ll come up with a final exam and then we can pass out bird diplomas (half parrot chewed, of course!).
