Beat The Boredom

One reader describes how she transformed her home into a birdie abode.

By Shannon, Indiana

Getting a little birdie bored? I have two birds, a mustached parakeet and a quaker. I wanted to have something in my home that has birds on it (besides the perch in the living room) and couldn't find anything to fit my taste in the stores.

I ended up wandering through my local fabric shop when I found a cotton print covered in exotic parrots, like macaws and cockatoos in bright, bold colors sitting in and around palm trees. Then, I got an idea to make a little blanket from cutouts of the birds and a pretty blue material for the background.

I went to work on my idea. I cut out the birds and trees from the fabric and sewed them onto the blue material. I was quite pleased with the way it turned out. Now, my whole bird room has matching curtains, cage covers and a blanket for the chilly nights by the TV. I even made a little shoe bag. It's just like the blanket, but the bird cutouts are pockets. It holds extra toys, treats and surprises for my birds and I find it helps keep down the clutter.

I really like my new creations and they were inexpensive to make. It just took a little creativity and one rainy afternoon. The next time you get bored, instead of turning on the TV and flipping through the channels, thing of something that you can make that would brighten up your bird room or bathroom.

A friend of mine even made a show curtain with birds on it using stencils she found at her local craft store. With the same stencils, she now had matching birds on her bathroom mirror, floor mat and curtains. She really enjoyed creating the new look in her bathroom and has since moved onto the kitchen.

I am glad to hear that there are other people out the that think of there birds as their kids or part of the family. I have friends that buy me bird stuff when the see it. i had a friend that went to Nashville and brought me back socks with singing/birds playing instruments on them. She said she had to buy them for me. I think it is wonderful that she has made her birds her world and can show it off. All the power to her!
