American Federation Of Aviculture Annual Convention

The 36th annual event takes place August 4-7 in St. Petersburg, Fla.

2010 American Federation of Aviculture 
The AFA's 2010 convention theme is "The Magic of Birds!"

This year, the AFA presents its 36th Annual Convention: The Magic of Birds! The annual educational convention this year will be at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel in downtown St. Petersburg, Fla., during August 4-7. The proceedings include:

  • A  magic show with live birds;
  • A behind-the-scenes tour of the Lowry Park Zoo;
  • A silent auction of bird art, books and related items; and
  • Raffles.

The conferene portion provides three full days packed with more than 25 talks including keynote speaker Benny J. Gallaway, Ph.D. on the blue-and-gold macaw. Other speakers include:

  • Darrel K. Styles, DVM, Ph. D., The Association of Avian Bornavirus, on proventricular dilatation disease;
  • Jean Pattison, "Nest, nursery and the new home";
  • Cassie Malina, "The secret of training birds by Steve Martin of Natural Encounters Inc.";
  • Lara Joseph on empowerment, choice, control, complexities and their effects on bird behavior;
  • Hildegard Niemann, "Pet parrot ownership in the future";
  • Johanna "Jeleen" Briscoe, DVM, DABVP (Avian), update on the Animal Welfare Act and birds;
  • Julie Corwin and Denise Lacazette, "Living with the big four: PDD, PBFD, Polyoma and Psittacosis";
  • As well as many more.
