One of the editors in our office asked me the other day what bird people were like and if there were any sayings or quotes about them. I told her the only quote that came to mind was the one from Mark Twain: "She was not quite what you would call unrefined. She was the kind of person that keeps a parrot.” (Note: The quote is from Following the Equator by Mark Twain. You can find it at the top of Chapter 57, as a quote attributed to Pudd’nhead Wilson’s New Calendar.) The editor laughed upon hearing this and said she thought that was insulting. I told her that I chose to take it as a compliment, such as bird people aren’t snooty.

This particular quote could be seen on t-shirts at bird shows, back 10 and more years ago, when there used to be a lot of local and national bird enthusiast organizations. I attended  and still do — a variety of events for animal lovers. The cat lovers were mostly decked out in tiger or leopard prints, the dog people wore lots of brown and dark colors, and the bird people wore jewel toned t-shirts or casual dresses. I have always thought of us bird people as bright and sparkling with atypical interests.

One of the pet industries biggest pet product trade shows is in a few weeks, and I have to figure out what to pack in my bags. I love bright colors  like the beautiful yellow feathers of my pied cockatiel and the amazing blue and green feathers of my blue-headed Pionus. I like to show my love of birds at these events, yet stick to the dress code of business casual. There are some interesting possibilities out there for sale right now that I thought I would share.

1) Talbots Parrot Sweater
I ran across this one a month ago when I went into Talbots looking for a pink sweater. I would have bought in on the spot but I needed the pink sweater more. This black summer sweater is adorable.  It’s a crewneck and 100% cotton. Talbots calls it a parrot sweater, but those look like budgies to me. One of my first birds was a cobalt blue budgie named Kistler after my grandfather. I will go back and get this sweater, but you can buy it online. It is part of their summer collection, so if you wait a little longer, it should go on sale. Cost is $79.50.

Find it here.

2) Birds Of Paradise Parrot Print Top by Alfred Dunner
If you like macaws, cotton and little jewels on your collar, the Birds of Paradise knit top by Alfred Dunner is for you. You may be able to find this any department store that sells Alfred Dunner. You can find it online and Draper’s & Damon right now for under $40.

3) Bird Parrot Chiffon Blouse
This is a great oversized, chiffon, long-sleeved parrot print blouse. I saw it when I was reading a shopping blog. The woman had bought it in Barcelona and loved the rhinestone rivets lapel. I was able to find it at a great price at Ali Express. The only thing that keeps me from getting it is I am not a fan of wearing slightly see-through blouses as I am never sure what to wear under it. You can get it for under $12.

Find it here.

4) Rosebud And Parrot Print Portofino Shirt
Continuing with the chiffons, this black chiffon rosebud and parrot print shirt by Portofino has long sleeves and a button-down front. Honestly, the birds don’t really look like parrots to me, but designers have always taken a creative approach with birds rather than going for accuracy. If you like chiffon, pair this with a cami and blazer and its perfect for the casual business dinner. You can find this one on sale for under $40 at Express.

This shirt is currently sold out, but keep an eye out for it here.

5) Birds Printed Button-Down Blouse
Looking for a classy, designer button down blouse with birds on it? Carolina Herrera came out with one that you can find out Neiman Marcus. This cotton, pointed collar blouse was made in Italy and features charming green finch-like birds. This birdy blouse doesn’t come cheap at a price of $690.

6) Stussy Birds Button-Down Shirt
This Stussy Birds button-down shirt for men is fun and colorful. Its pointed collar and little pouch chest pocket make it fun for work or others summer gatherings. Available for $72 at Urban Outfitters.

7) Bird Print Tie Waist Top
Feeling Lucky? This Lucky Brand top ultrasoft jersey top has a cute drape-tie at the front and a charming red bird print. A little more casual, it’s perfect for business casual days at the office. Priced at $49.50.

I love that black chiffon shirt very much. The prints in all the tops are amazing. I love the dresses which have beautiful prints on them like that of Camilla's dresses have.

Hmmmm, very nice. But, why are the designs available only for women? Men like birdies too, you know. One could call this discrimination!
