Create A Pet Bird Tornado Disaster Kit

Before a tornado strikes, create a pet bird tornado disaster kit with these items.

By Nikki Moustaki

Keep a pet bird tornado disaster kit in the basement, which should include:

  • Several-day supply of fresh bird food*
  • Several-day supply of fresh water*
  • Newspaper
  • Paper towels
  • An avian first aid kit (including styptic powder, clamps, gauze, scissors, alcohol swabs, cloth tape and petroleum jelly)
  • Hand towels
  • Large towels
  • A blanket
  • Tape

Keep in mind that water may not be running in your area after a devastating tornado, and you may have to take some with you if you evacuate. Do not be left without clean drinking water.

Keep your tornado disaster kit inside a backpack so that you can easily take it with you in case you need to evacuate the area. You will need one hand to carry your pet bird, and if you have more than one pet bird, you won’t have enough hands for the supplies and the pet bird carriers if your pet bird tornado kit isn’t easy to carry.

* Note: Periodically check the expiration dates of your bird's disaster kit's food and water supplies to make sure they haven't expired.
