BIRD TALK: He Said, She Said

Top-5 Complaints From Owners & Top-5 Complaints From Birds

By Liz Wilson, CVT, CPBC

Birds can really be a bother to live with, as many folks know. Working as I do as a parrot behavior consultant, I hear a lot of disparagement about living with our avian companions. Without question, companion birds have complaints about their people as well.

What follows is an “interview” with a typical bird owner and an African grey (because he was the most articulate). Here’s what they each had to say in regards to their Top 5 complaints and grievances:

1. Birds never shut up!
Morning ‘till night, birds are rarely quiet for more than a few seconds. Even teeny, little finches make beeping noises all day. I used to think their noise was adorable, but no longer! Budgies are so cheerful interacting with each other that they never stop making happy, little chirping and chortling noises. Don’t they know that silence is golden? Can’t we have a little quiet around here sometimes?
And I never get to sleep late on the weekends anymore. Why don’t birds understand that I don’t have to get up early on Sunday? Can’t they just give me that one morning off?
