Shop To It!

By Laura Doering

Laura Doering shops for her birds

Ah, the shopping issue! Who doesn’t like to shop? Well, honestly, I am more of a opportunistic shopper than a shopaholic. If I’m out buying food for the birds and I stumble upon a great toy on sale, I rarely pass it up. But no, I don’t have shelves filled to the brim with overstock. I’ve found that I get more out of short, focussed shopping trips than shop-’til-you-drop ones. I make a weekly produce run to buy the fruit and vegetables on sale.

Of course, like any bird owner, I can’t stroll down the aisle without taking stock of the produce the whole flock enjoys. I love standing in line with a cart full of healthy produce, especially when I’m behind the guy with the liter of soda and a frozen pizza. If he only knew those sweet potatoes and bell peppers go to the conure; the ‘tiel gets the carrots and broccoli and the rabbit (and the birds) gets the cilantro and romaine lettuce. Fortunately, they are willing to share, which means a healthy salad for me.

Come think of it, I do like shopping — for the birds. That explains the sweatshirt with the pocket that goes all across; the one I would never wear in public but Ollie loves to crawl in for a snuggle.

Cool article! I like shopping for my bird too, but sometimes it's hard to find something my bird will appreciate!
