Bird people don’t know what sex their birds are?” asked a bewildered dog-owning co-worker. “Well, some do, some don’t,” I replied. She had a puzzled look. “That’s so weird not to know. My dog wouldn’t be the same if he turned out to be a girl; his name, his collar color … everything would be different.” I knew by her intonation that she was thinking something along the lines of, “Bird people are different, but I didn’t know they were that different."
