Ahh, this feels like old times. It has been a long time since I wrote the Editor’s Letter for BIRD TALK. Editor Laura Doering is on maternity leave so I get to put pen to paper once again. Actually I am typing this. There is no pen and no paper. We are completely green in our process and don’t use paper until the final printed magazine product.
Today, “green” is thrown around with words such as natural and holistic. It is all over the pet industry. Our sister publication, Pet Product News International, which covers the pet industry, now even does a special issue called Natural Pet Product Merchandiser. Our sister publication Cat Fancy flips over to Natural Cat several times a year, and it is the same with our sister publication Dog Fancy and its flip side Natural Dog.
Don’t expect a Natural Bird anytime soon. In fact, it makes me laugh to even say it. Natural Bird. Is there anything more natural than a bird? You can’t get any more natural than with seeds and there are even some bird pelleted diets out there called natural.
A lot of bird toys are made out of natural products already — perches, too. I suppose we can focus on a way of making cages more environmentally friendly, especially when it comes to recycling them.
It is definitely food for thought and we will be covering this topic in an upcoming issue. After all, bird people do live with the ultimate green, natural, no-gas guzzling flying machine recyclers.
A piece of wood — let’s just chew that into mulch and use it as nesting material. That book — let’s just chew that into tiny pieces and use it as nesting material. I am green parrot, hear me roar.
