It’s Senior Associate Editor Jessica Pineda’s 4-year anniversary at BIRD TALK and, in celebration, I asked if she wanted to write the Editor’s Letter. She liked the idea … and then proceeded to not write anything at all. Instead, she interviewed me, Editorial Director Melissa Kauffman and Senior Graphic Designer Terri Blake on our most memorable moments at BIRD TALK (and added her own). Personally, I think she’s cheating, but it is her Editor’s Letter. Here’s what we had to say:
Laura Doering: I brought Sunshine, a double yellow-headed Amazon, into the office for a photo shoot and I had to briefly leave him in my cubicle. While I was away, Sunshine burst into song — “I Am Your Sunshine” in typical Amazon off-key fashion. Heads were popping up from cubicles all over the office. The editors of our sister publications (Dog Fancy, Cat Fancy, etc.) were totally bewildered and didn’t know a parrot was in the building. They thought a co-worker had finally gone over the deep end.
Melissa Kauffman: I have a memorable article: Chris Davis’ “Hello Love, Goodbye Birdie.” [The article was about giving up your bird for love; read it at BirdChannel.com/ByeByeBirdie.] It breaks my heart every single time when I hear about this, because I know it’s an unhealthy relationship when someone asks you to give up something you love when it doesn’t [physically] hurt you. It’s not like smoking or drinking, which can kill you in the end … [the bird] is your family member. If someone’s not willing to do the work [to fix the problems they have with the pet], they’re not worth being in a relationship with.
Terri Blake: On my first photo shoot, I loved watching you guys take charge of the birds, cleaning up the bird poop, etc. I remember how Anastasia Thrift [a former BIRD TALK editor] interacted with the bird. There was a sense of something really cool between the two of them.
Jessica Pineda: The 2011 Houston Parrot Festival … except I can’t say which part, because it was all memorable. People who have been to Parrot Festival know exactly what I’m talking about. I had an absolute blast though, and I can’t wait to go back. All of you should go, too. We’ll see you there!
Thanks Jessica! What is your most memorable BIRD TALK moment?
