Louie, an Indian ring-necked parakeet
Indian ring-necked parakeet
The best part about being a bird mom:
When deciding what the best thing is about being Louie’s Mom, I had to think about our life. We enjoy everything together from morning showers, brushing teeth (mom’s) and breakfast to goodies with kisses and “bye-byes.” Before I get through the garage door after work, my baby boy is squealing “Hurry up Mom!” Then it’s welcome kisses and Louie asking “Gimmie some sugars.” Then it’s chewing open the mail and maybe reading Bird Talk, and making and sharing dinner while talking about what we each did during the day. Louie is teaching his new IRN sister, Libby, to talk. It’s working. Later, we watch T.V. with Dad. While I type, Louie dictates while perched on my laptop to our BBFF’s (Best Birdie Friends Forever) on BirdChannel, or he helps making those birdie friends toys. Right before Louie is ready for bed, he snuggles up on my chest, sits as close to my face as possible and stares into my eyes. That’s it! The “best” thing about being his Mom, because at that moment I know he feels our special connection, too, is that “I’m his Mom!”

The best part about being a bird mom:
I would have to say that the best thing about being a bird mom is that Bird (yes that is his name) brings me so much joy. In 2000, I was told that I could not have children. I really took a liking to animals, and in 2004, I met my boyfriend and Bird was part of the package. Since that day, we have become inseparable. I work across the street from my home and from the minute I leave, I know that I have a guardian angel with me and vice versa on the way back home. He will sit at the window and watch over me each day. He is a true conversation piece and such entertainment for not only me, but our guests as well. I look forward to each morning when Bird is outside of his cage awaiting his breakfast. Our morning time is a great start to my day. I have been dealing with a mother that was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in 2002, and in January 2009, my boyfriend was diagnosed with Brain cancer. I have acquired a peach-faced lovebird, and then purchased a mate for him as well. All three of my birds have become therapy for me with all that I have had to deal with. Each of them have their own characters. I usually take them everywhere with me. Bird is a big fan of the beach and lives to hang out with me while I fish as you can see in the picture. Little Bird and Baby Bird just love the company of one another, so they don't travel with me as much. Overall, I know that my birds will be there for me when my friends are having a bad day, or if I just need a good pick me up after dealing with family stress. That is the best thing about being a bird mom.
