Large and In Charge

Macaws and cockatoos fill up your heart as well as your home with their charisma.

By Kashmir Csaky

As the largest and some of the flashiest parrots around, macaws and cockatoos attract attention wherever they go. Macaws — with their long, elegant tails and palette of brilliant colors — dazzle onlookers, and cockatoos inspire dramatic reactions from all that they meet.

Those who seek out these attractive birds, often enjoy an energetic and playful bird. They are empathetic about the needs of a large bird, and are looking for a bird big enough to cuddle and pat on the head.

Macaws
The most popular large macaws are blue & golds, green wings, scarlets, militaries and hyacinths. All are large birds weighing from 975 grams for an average military macaw to 1,800 grams for a big hyacinth macaw. These  big, powerful and active birds require large, strong cages and an unending supply of chewable toys.
