Laurie Hess, DVM, Dipl. ABVP (avian), hosted a red carpet event called “Critters, Cable and Cocktails” in early December to celebrate her debut on Animal Planet. More than 60 people attended the event, held at Veterinary Center for Birds & Exotics in Bedford Hills, N.Y. The group watched Dr. Hess on two hour-long episodes of “Pets 101: Peculiar Pets” and “Pets 101: Little Pets.” Both programs will air through December.

Dr. Hess also introduced party guests to a menagerie of small pets, including a pet pig, pygmy goat, capybara, skunk, gecko and ferret.

The Veterinary Center for Birds & Exotics opened in February 2010 to care for birds, rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, chinchillas, smaller rodents, reptiles, amphibians and other exotic species.

Services include preventative health care and wellness check-ups, new pet examinations, grooming, diagnostic services, surgery, geriatric care, dental care, hospitalization and emergency services. Dr. Hess also specializes in behavior counseling and nutrition.
