Kaytee Products, Inc., is recalling several of its bird food products due to a possible Salmonella contamination. The possible Salmonella contamination is from the parsley flakes used in the bird food products. The parsley flakes come from Kaytee’s supplier, Specialty Commodities Inc. Kaytee stated it had no positive Salmonella results on its finished products to suggest possible contamination, but the company is initiating a recall in accordance with FDA guidelines. Kaytee has reported no cases of Salmonella contamination from its consumers.

Below is a list of the products involved in the recall. Products not on this list are not part of the recall. Kaytee asks that consumers check the "Best Before Date” code on their products to see if the product is involved in the recall. Consumers who have purchased products involved in the recall can call Kaytee Consumer Care to report their case. Kaytee asks that consumers provide a copy or picture UPC Code and Best Before Date from the bird food packages to verify the product is part of the recall, and then throw the product away. For more information, consumers may call Kaytee at 1-800 KAYTEE-1 (800-529-8331) or email or go to

Salmonella is the genus name of an organism that is a Gram-negative bacteria. The disease is called salmonellosis. Of the more than 2,000 Salmonella species, only a few cause disease in pet birds and parrots. Some infected pet birds show symptoms, but not all birds will. Signs of Salmonella contamination in pet birds include lethargy, fluffed up appearance and weight loss. Sick birds can transmit the bacteria to other birds and humans by contact and fecal contamination through the bird’s food and water. People who have handled contaminated products may become infected too.
