Southern bird club fair raises funds for avian research

Gulf South Bird ClubThe Gulf South Bird Club’s 2007 Bird Show & Fair on the Bayou takes place March 3 to 4, 2007 at the Evergreen Cajun Center in Houma, Louisiana.

The weekend’s events include shows from the National Cockatiel Society (NCS) and the National Finch and Softbill Society show. Show times run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days. A $1 admission price includes a chance to win $100 as part of the festivities.

Al Decoteau will judge the NCS regional cockatiel and NFSS soft bill shows. The NFSS finch and softbill show is judged by Laura Bewley, and Terry Perez is the judge the NCS cockatiel show.

The Gulf South Bird Club, Inc was founded in 1978 for the purpose of exchanging information and experiences in bird keeping. Since then, its membership has grown to include pet bird owners, breeders, avian veterinarians and other avian societies.

Members of the Gulf South Bird Club, Inc. were affected when Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in 2005. “It has been very hard for us to get back on our feet since the hurricane,” Perez said. “But we made lots of friends who helped us help our members that lost birds, and they donated birds to us to give them.” The club helped distribute seed and supplies to other states affected by the hurricane, said Loretta Perez, director of the Gulf South Bird Club, Inc.

Proceeds from the Gulf South Bird Club’s annual show go toward various avian research projects. Last year the club donated to the American Federation of Aviculture Disaster Fund and to Louisiana State University Avian Research.

For more information or to donate a prize for the raffle, contact Loretta Perez at (985) 665-3902 or e-mail
